WTHR – Indiana’s Puppy Pipeline Part 2

by Shanna on July 29, 2010

While puppies from commercial breeding operations are sold to pet stores, their parents are often left behind. Those dogs usually live their adult lives in a cage. So what happens to dogs that can no longer produce puppies? What do commercial breeders do with those? Kim Townsend, a dog breeding industry researcher, says many of those dogs become the forgotten victims of the Puppy Pipeline. “A lot of them just stay in the same cage until they die,” Townsend said. “They just linger.” Uncle Bill’s gets most of its puppies from commercial dog breeders in Daviess County, Ind. That area is home to dozens of commercial breeders who supply thousands of puppies to central Indiana pet stores.

@TonylovesGod

I meant to type, “There are enough shelter dogs that should replace the puppy mill dogs”.

@yeechinhuang

Puppy mills should all be closed. There are enough shelter dogs that die to replace puppy mill dogs.

anyone who wants to know more about breeding dogs may also find the book “Breeding Dogs for Dummies” useful. it teaches how to decide whether dog breeding is really for you, choose the right breed, create the best possible breeding environment, establish a breeding program, comply with all government and AKC regulations etc

Hunte is 20 miles from me. They load them on 18 wheelers and those trucks smell of urine and poop. They ship their product as far away as New York. Never buy from a pet store.

thanks capitalism!!!!

And to think the Hunte Corporation had an *icthus* on its’ advertising sign… *shakes head*. It gives the ones who do take that sign seriously a bad name.

Unfortunately, Puppy mills treat their dogs as commodities/slaves….Then better laws and law enforcement need to be in place to ensure some minimum standards of humane treatment of animals is required. Poor dogs. Humans can be so unfeeling, greedy and selfish.

yeechinhuang July 30, 2010 at 1:56 am

Puppy mills can be profitable and still humane and decent. It is up to the owners/operator’s sense of decency to uphold better standards for their breeding dogs. They are just too lazy, too greedy or they feel that dogs do not deserve better. Technically the breeding dogs are employees of puppy mills. Like any business, you can exploit your workers and let them work to death without any benefits…excellent companies treat their employees very well and stay in business for the long haul.
