Hermit Crabs- Easy to Care for Pets or Mistreated Animals?

by Shanna on June 17, 2010

If you can send this around to your friends, it’d be a HUGE help! People have to know the truth about hermit crabs, and not enough people are doing much to help hermit crabs. Do it for the crabs. Pet stores sell their animals for money. They sell all their special hermit crab crap just to get a few bucks off of you. Truth is, these products will kill your hermit crab. Do not trust what pet stores tell you when it comes to animal care. Research thoroughly outside of the pet store before believing anything a pet store tells you to do. They educate their employees wrongly just to get a few extra bucks off of you. This is utterly selfish and must be stopped. Also, these animals are better off in the wild than in our homes. They will not thrive no matter how well you keep them. Please do not buy a hermit crab from a pet store. Instead, you can adopt one. Just search some Internet classifieds, newspapers, etc., and I bet you can find yourself a nice hermit crab for free. Sorry for really making the description more of a rambling rant than a true description, but it’s the truth. Also, I urge you to sign the anti-hermit crab race petition. www.thepetitionsite.com

It is illegal to catch them yourself in most places, and they belong in the wild. How would you feel if some alien abducted you from your home?

coolgph99 June 17, 2010 at 11:26 pm

mine lived 7 years and i caught it my self in the ocean cause i hate when they have painted shells and when u buy the the pets store gets more money to order more so catch ur own its better for the crabs

AnimalAwareness365 June 17, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Well, if you buy them, you support the supply and demand for them, which means that the store will order more craps. If they order more crabs, their supplier will have to capture more from the wild.

Also, by buying them, you are giving the inhumane store your money that they could use to buy hundreds of more crabs with. The supplier will also get money when the pet store orders more.

…………wow

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 2:07 am

Is it all the way in the shell, or is it hanging out? You’d probably smell a horrible death smell if he/she were dead.

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 2:17 am

That won’t make a difference on how long it lives for.

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 2:41 am

No. They belong in the wild and won’t live nearly as long as they would in the wild. Please keep them in the wild where they belong.

How many people with hermit crabs do you know that have had hermit crabs survive for fifteen years?

DamienRaquel June 18, 2010 at 3:57 am

I agree that they live longer in the wild, but they don’t necessarily die after a few months. They can live up to fifteen years.

And painted shells are horrible.

Thank you for this video! We bought 2 crabs thinking they would be easy. Now one is curled up in his shell. It barely moves. Put 2 shells in there but it didn’t move in. Wish we didn’t get them. Is this dying on us?

everytime I got to the boardwalk at the beach, hermit crabs are always for sale.

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 6:35 am

Oh ok. :)

CaptainCheeseCurl June 18, 2010 at 7:19 am

I was more stating it because of certain comments people were making that I felt might lead to that subject. Your point was well made and agreeable.

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 7:54 am

Oh, ok. I wasn’t really implying that.

CaptainCheeseCurl June 18, 2010 at 7:55 am

I know, I was simply making it clear that not all animals are at a disadvantage in a household.

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 8:15 am

Since hermit crabs are not domesticated, they have a hard time.

CaptainCheeseCurl June 18, 2010 at 9:10 am

Certain domesticated pets live longer in captivity.

Adopting from a humane society is a billion times better than a breeder though breeder’s are a step up from a pet store if you get the correct one…

AnimalAwareness365 June 18, 2010 at 10:12 am

Unfortunately, breeders aren’t so great, because they contribute greatly to the over-population of other species, thus causing tons of them to get euthanized at shelters.

mazzer10 June 18, 2010 at 10:52 am

NEVER buy any pets in the petstore. ALLWAYS find an honest breeder (preferably a hobbyist) who will have guaranteed CAPTIVE BRED and healthy animals! there are species of hermit crab in the hobby that are alot more suited to captivity than those commonly available!

There ARE safe paints out there to use, do your research. never go into a petstore with no intention of buying a pet and come out with one! compulsive pet buying is immoral !!

TheTeamAWA June 18, 2010 at 11:25 am

We HATE how sellers paint on hermit crab’s shells! Its just to get attention and money! I read somewhere that somebody deyed a few chicks hair so people would buy them! Great video by the way!
