You need a filter, lightning, a tank, gravel, fish food, and a heater if it’s not goldfish. You need to run those things for about two weeks and they cost about 150.00 in total if you buy a 10 gallon. They cost 250.00 if you buy a 55 gallon.

What species as a pair? There’s actually very few species that thrive in a pair!

    Have a read through this:
    http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Beginning_Fishkeeping

Don’t be tempted to go out and buy tank and fish at the same time, buy the tank, and all equipment you need, then you can research species while the tank goes through the nitrogen cycle.

As for cost that depends on where you live and what kind of set up you’re going for. It costs as much as you make it really. I don’t want to think how much I’ve spent!!

The very first thing you should get is a beginner’s book on aquarium keeping. You can find these at any book store, pet store, or your local library. I recommend you buy at least one to have on hand for a reference. There is much more to establishing your first aquarium than can easily be explained here.
Many books will recommend that you buy a 10-20 gallon kit. These come with most of the components you will need to get started. The components usually aren’t top-of-the-line, but should be adequate for a beginner’s set-up.
Prices vary dramatically depending on what size tank you get, what style, what type of tank you get, what kind of stand, and if you buy a kit or buy your components individually. You can buy a basic 10-gallon kit from Walmart, without stand, for around $30. I bought my 29-gallon tank, hood, and stand, on sale, for between $150- $200, I don’t remember exactly now.
Don’t buy a male and female pair of fish until you know what you’re doing. You will likely end up with tons of fry, which will be eaten by their parents, if you’re lucky. If not, you will end up with dozens of fish that will need more room than you have available.
Please do yourself and your future pets a favor. Read everything you can get your hands on about this fascinating hobby, so you will be successful at it. Nothing is more discouraging than to wake up to a new tank full of dead fish, and not know what you did wrong. Good luck!

really depends. I had two goldfish in a one gallon tank and they lived a long time, it probably only costed me about 15 bucks total. ( tank, fish, decoration, rocks, water conditioner etc)

But if you really want to go all out and buy a big tank it’s a lot more.
