Pet fish help? (Please help me my fish might be in danger)?

by Shanna on March 6, 2010

I won my fish just yesterday at my state fair.

It’s a fish thats white with orange spots and is about and inch big.
I don’t have any fish tank or anything but I just putted him in a container which isnt that big. Yesterday when I won him he was in a Zip-Loc at the fair when I got him home I put him in the container.

I filled the container up HALF way, and yesterday I feared he might die because I don’t have all the right “Fish Supplies” for him.

So is it okay if he stays in the container for awhile? Does he need oxygen or any special needs? Please help me:) 10 points best answer!

THANK YOU!

He should be fine if its only a few days… its not like the folks at the state fair treat him any better…

Just remember to keep the water at room temp. and clean it out…. But i highly suggest getting a larger tank before you need to clean it

well i think he would probablly be alright for now if u wash his tank daily by putting him in a different container, emptying out the container he was already in, and giving it new fresh water about room tempuraturee. and he has to have fish food. also, try cutting up some carrots verrrrrrry small, and put some in there. he might eat it…
good luck with ur new pet fish!
hope i helped.

Don’t know what kind of fish you have from your description, but it sounds like maybe a small koi. If it has long whiskers, then it probably is. You can go to your local pet store (PetSmart) or walmart and buy an inexpensive small tank, maybe a $30-$40 investment and it’s big enough for a few small fish and they come with the filter, pump, etc. Your fish will need oxygen or he’ll die. buy some dechlorinating drops, don’t know how much chlorine is in your public water supply. buy some fish food and you should be good to go.

i cant believe this practise hasnt been outlawed, its cruel and should be banned!

your fish hasnt had the best start in life. if you have nothing else, put him in a bucket of water that has stood overnight as this lets all the chlorine evaporate off, hopefully making it a little safer for your fish. you want to create the largest surface area possible for effective gas exchange to take place.

goldfish can survive in stagnant ponds, how i dont know, but he will still need all the correct equipment. he will need oxygen, fill up a jug from his water bucket and slowly pour it back in creating lots of bubbles, the bubbles allow the exchange of gases to take place so oxygen goes in, harmful gases come out.

he may be ok for a few days, but dont delay on getting him sorted out. also, find a suitable lid for the bucket, but dont cover it over completely, you need air to get in.

Please tell them to not put fish in uhm, zip-lock bags.

FIll the container up three-quarters, and cover half of it with a piece of paper or something. Your fish might jump out, you wouldn’t want to find him on the floor.

Get fish supplies now.
I cant figure out the specie of your fish, so could you supply a picture? He might be a coldwater fish, since he wasn’t kept with a heater, although a zip-lock bag was barely efficient.
Right now, just buy fish food for all general fish. Flake food. If he’s not a goldfish, then don’t buy goldfish food. Take him to the pet store, be careful, and ask them if they can identify it, otherwise give me a picture and I should be able to tell you.
He should be fine in the container for a while. I suggest you give a picture, and refrain from stressing him any more.

Buy a tank.
A three to four gallon one would be good, ask at the store for one. Make sure that when you put him in, that the water temperature in the tank is the same. This is a must, as fish are cold-blooded. I suggest a filter, and since I don’t know wether or not it’s a tropical fish, I’m not sure about a heater or anything else.
Supply him with shelter, plants, and gravel. He needs somewhere to hide, as fish can die from stress.

Until you supply a picture of you fish or tell me what specie it is, I can’t help you any more than this.

You have a fancy goldfish. For now he is fine in a container, just remember to change out 50% of the water every 2-3 days. Use bottled water if you do not have water conditioner/dechlor.

You will really want to get hima tank 10 gallon is fine here.

You will need to get a filter for the tank usually walmart has these kits for around $20-$25 depending on where you live.
It comes included with everything you need.

Right now you can feed him fresh veggies if you have no fish food. They should be fed veggies a few times per week or more. Since his container will not house a filter don’t bother with the air stone. It will do nothing to add dissolved oxygen to the container so no worries. Replacing 50% of the water every 2-3 days will do this for you. You can use a turkey baster to remove any poo at the bottom of the container as well.

Well make sure that you have some Tap water dechlorinator. But if you used the water that the fish came in he should be fine for a couple of days.
Hope i helped! And that is a really cute fish! :)

I think he will be just fine for up to like a week but after then i think you should get some fish supplies like a tank, water conditioner, food, and proper cleaning products.

Peek in on him every once in a while and if he seems to not have enough water put some more in there. I have had fish before and the kind you have are very tough and should live pretty long time with proper care.

I hope this helps!
