Pet Birds : How to Buy a Cockatiel

by Shanna on June 11, 2010

Buying a cockatiel first requires deciding if the bird should be primarily attractive or primarily friendly, and then visit a local pet store to find a healthy, active cockatiel specimen. Purchase a cockatiel based on appearance, personality and health with information from a pet hobbyist in this free video on pet care. @5WAP its a little more tricky to know the gender of a lovebird.
but with cockatiels…..some females have a duller plumage color than the male.

@5WAP
Sometimes by the sound of its voice, or if within a year or two it lays eggs.

i gave my cockatiel to my grandma. we weren’t very good to it. besides, my grandma’s super loonely and she loves it now. now i have parakeets, and i am pretty sure i take good care of them because they are happy, and they like me, so yeah. that’s a cute cockatiel in rthe vidfeo. lol.

I would recommend one. They cost about 70-90 bucks they do not usually hurt when they bite, so if you have children not a big deal if they get bit. Also they live about 15 years.

the bird’s like, “Stop… ok… I just wanna sit already!” lol!

Ratherfish90 June 12, 2010 at 2:19 am

@skyress21 yes, cockatials can be paired with most birds smaller then thems

Leebsterftw June 12, 2010 at 2:58 am

your cockatiel wants a scratch behind the head.. thats why he nibble and squawker .. mine does that all the time, i got mine from a pet shop and he is inseparable from humans, if a blood feather breaks u might wanna take him to a vet asap.. they can die from that.

@leggoon619
No. I owned one for 11 years. he/she should be fine as long as it meets all the other requirements clear eyes no discharge, etc. They puff up for sleep or if there pissed.

Kage999 June 12, 2010 at 3:56 am

Dont worry about it I owned one, they will always nip/bite just ignore it they dont hurt :) and eventually they will get tired and stop biting.

leggoon619 June 12, 2010 at 4:43 am

It all depends on the bird usually, I have cockatiels that talk their little heads off and I have some that I have spent countless hours trying to get them to speak and no result, from what I understand the females are least likely to speak and lo and behold all my females don’t talk, but they will chirp your ears off.

Parakeets have the largest capability of having vocabulary, in fact a budgie holds the record for the most diversified vocabulary of a bird.

earlpressley June 12, 2010 at 5:07 am

Yes. They can be together, although I have never seen them associate with one another inside the aviary; they seem to keep to themselves, but I have never seen one go after the other. Keep a large enough feeding area for however many birds you have, I can see problems arising over food. All of my birds eat at the same time it seems, once one gets hungry, the rest of them decide that they are hungry as well.

Mohamedahmed331 June 12, 2010 at 5:08 am

the’yre not that loud really comparison to other birds they are really quiet

skyress21 June 12, 2010 at 5:27 am

can cockatials be together with parakeets?

Weirdo033695111 June 12, 2010 at 6:11 am

COCKA SUCK YEAH balls

NSMidnightMoon June 12, 2010 at 6:27 am

it can depend.
they can be 50-200 canadian dollars for the bird alone.
when i got mine, he came from a breeder and he was super tame. adn he was only 50$!

FishingKing754 June 12, 2010 at 7:20 am

Well that’s true, but you can always teach lovebirds to control their chirping.

mikejackson4ever June 12, 2010 at 7:33 am

I think it’s a baby, from the sound of it, so maybe he’s training it?

mikejackson4ever June 12, 2010 at 8:23 am

They’re just so loud, though.
