ok so i recently visisted my local animal humaine society. and while i was there i decided that i want to have a career that involves animals. well on futher thought ive decided that i want to open up my own animal shelter. but i have many questions. should i make it nonprofit or have fees, adoptions, pet supplies to sell, and etc. also what steps do i need to do in order to make it sucessful? i really just want it to be an all dog shelter. and maybe critters. but no cats or horses or exotic animals. haha. in order to make my dreams come true will i absolutely have to go to school for like a vet assistant degree or can i just wing it and hire ppl who know how to really take care of the animals. see im 21 and have been in school for elementary education and graphic design already. and i just finished up this semester halfway thru my graphic design program. so like i dont want to prolong school any longer than it has to be. any advice on the education part and the what my shelter should be part would be great! and anything else anyone can think of that isnt mean or deragatory.
recent opening up my own animal shelter dreams/goals?

I would first, before anything volunteer at a local animal shelter. This will help you see the in and outs of a animal shelter and how much time and dedication it takes to run one. It will also give you much needed experience with animals.
Second, I would take any kind of animal related classes you can. Since you plan on having an all dog shelter, I would recommend taking dog training classes. I would also find people who know a lot about animals as well to work at your shelter.
In my opinion it should have small adoption fees in order to help keep the shelter running. (Buying food, blankets, medical treatment etc). I would also set a limit of how many animals you can take in. I would start small, with the max of 10 dogs and so forth.
Look up any legal issues, rules and regulations, finance and practical help. This is VERY important before running a shelter. You will need to get licensed as well. If you are not running the shelter from your home and are looking for a place to rent or buy for your shelter, you will need to make sure you do an extensive search and it will take time to find the right place!
Remember, running a shelter is not an easy task and takes a lot of time, money and commitment. It’s best to look over all the things you will need before starting.
Good luck!
