As an artist, I was given the challenge to create based on the phrase “Just sit there and look pretty!” I created a video documentary to raise awareness about the horrors of puppy mills, the pet stores who keep puppy mills in business, and the heroes in animal shelters and rescues who save them. While puppies from commercial breeding operations are sold to pet stores, their parents are often left behind. Those dogs usually live their adult lives in a cage. So what happens to dogs that can no longer produce puppies? What do commercial breeders do with those? Kim Townsend, a dog breeding industry researcher, says many of those dogs become the forgotten victims of the Puppy Pipeline. “A lot of them just stay in the same cage until they die,” Townsend said. “They just linger.” Uncle Bill’s gets most of its puppies from commercial dog breeders in Daviess County, Ind. That area is home to dozens of commercial breeders who supply thousands of puppies to central Indiana pet stores.
